I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

How do, Scraps, Mayuko, and all!
Avatar 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko, Scraps, james, and other listeners. Where is this happy island?
Avatar 12:03pm Sem:

Hello, Mayuko, Scraps, ljfw, fred. Along for the ride this frozen afternoon.
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

Hallos, my radio family Scraps! Hope you're staying warm and cozy!
Welcome, james, and fred! The happy island is located in remote area of the WFMU universe.
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Sem! Glad to have you join our ride!
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

(It's a screenshot from the film Fantasia, Ave Maria)
Avatar 12:08pm fred:

I really this Cacciapaglia piece. New to me, as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

Weirdly I was thinking of "Fantasia" earlier, specifically the dinosaur/"Rite of Spring" sequence, and how one theme from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (Saruman's orc-making/war-mustering theme) seems a direct nod to part of that Stravisnky piece.
  12:09pm rw:

Hey kids! My Saturday routine shifted slightly so I can listen live this morning! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm gloomsday:

hello friends
Avatar 12:11pm fred:

@james: A lot of the soundtrack of Conan the barbarian is a "nod" to Rite of Spring. I quote that because it's closer to a rip-off
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Ha! I was just re-watching that film for the millions of times, james! Can't believe it's made in 1940. Don't seem that old except the tyrannosaurs are not furry, unlike the recent dinosaur study.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

When you want primitive or primeval, it seems, nobody beats Igor!
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Yay rw! Glad to have you here! Thanks for tuning in, gloomsday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm listener james from westwood:

I saw it during a rerelease in maybe 1972 or 3 when I was teeny. Saw it again in ~1991 after the restoration. Wild stuff indeed for 1940.
  12:14pm rw:

Dinosaurs are furry now? I don't see too many movies.
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

I thought you would like this Sei Note, fred!
  12:15pm mzzmz:

outdoor in the single digit eve reckons...
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

I guess they're feathered, rather than furry. All what I believed about dinosaurs in my childhood proven to be false!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and Vertigo Players worldwide. Thanks for helping dispose of the vile 2017 and bringing us closer to a better future. I trust your apartment is warm enough.

Hi Ken! So glad I don't have to commute in this snow, haha! Welcome on board, coelacanth∅! hallos mzzmz, close! Debussy.
  12:20pm mzzmz:

horowitz, huh? he should've stay on....
Avatar 12:23pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko and chilly ones. I have a soft spot for Max Fleischer's cartoons. He uses less sugar to taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm coelacanth∅:

that picture is like a dream...maybe what pala looked like
  12:24pm Rickwaukee:

that VHorowitz reminded me of hearing about how Wold Boy was nuts about the arrival of cold winter temperatures - felt energized and ecstatic
  12:24pm P-90:

Hello and Happy Impending New Year, Mayuko-DJ , Vertighosts, furry and not-furry tyrannosaurs, etc...
  12:25pm Rickwaukee:

Avatar 12:25pm fred:

Anything that reminds me of Reich is going to work indeed. I've been listening to Kuniko Kato a lot these past few weeks. The local Japanese cultural center finally sent me a newsletter a few weeks ago, years after I subscribed: hopefully I'll get a warning if she comes back
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

Hello Brian in UK! I think I see what you mean by "less sugar", they weren't just all cute cute. Those old cartoons never get old!
Avatar 12:28pm Brian in UK:

The trees in the still seem to be like a window frame into another world. The viewer being inside.
  12:28pm Rickwaukee:

I bet, after dashing about nude in the snow for awhile, that he found getting warm with his wolf friends was equally good feeling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Scraps:

H'lo Vertigoites. I have made soup and coffee, ready to go.
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ I agree! That "Ave maria" scene from that film Fantasia (where I captured this image from) is just so so beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Webhamster Henry:

That's pretty magical, Mayuko!
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

Glad you dig, and beautiful image, Rickwaukee! That's always my favorite. Thanks for tuning in, P-90! Happy holidays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Vertigo forth and prosper!
Avatar 12:34pm fred:

Doug! I hope you're enjoying your time off school
  12:35pm Rickwaukee:

This reminds me of one of my favorite Rainer Maria songs simply because it has the same title. Vocal reminds me of Eno
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

@Brian That's exactly what happens in that scene! There's a slit of light far in the darkness and it comes nearer nearer - and it turns out to be a window - and emerges into this beautiful forest out there and then the sun rises. So good!
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Soup and hot coffee are the best on a day like this, Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Doug Schulkind:

I am enjoying my break immensely!
  12:38pm Joe McG:

Really like this Nomade Orquestra, Mayuko! Happy new year!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

Happy holidays, and thanks for tuning in, Webhamster Henry!
So glad to have you here, Doug!!!!!
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee ah! were they from your town?
  12:39pm rw:

Brian, a few weeks ago I photographed the patents for Max Fleischer's Rotoscope. They're pretty cool. I don't feel right about sharing my client's images or I'd upload a page or two.
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

JOE MCG!!!!!!! Of course! You marching band freak, you!
  12:43pm Joe McG:

Ha ha, thanks, hope you had a good one, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Scraps:

I remember vividly dropping acid with my first girlfriend, Marie, and watching a double bill of Fantasia and Allegro Non Troppo, entranced. People stared at us, which I eventually figured out was because we were laughing at the parts where we were supposed to be chilled, and vice versa. This was forty years ago; I'm amazed thinking back on it that I was even going out with crowds of people.... smh.
  12:44pm rw:

There's a popular video game called Cuphead that uses some of the old animation techniques, hand drawing, etc. My son was playing it for a while. I'm not so into the fake scratched film but other than that it looks amazing.
Avatar 12:45pm Brian in UK:

@rw that's cool, quite understand.
I am still hooked on Eadweard Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope. He was a devilish character, he literally got away with murder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Scraps:

@rw, I don't know the video game, but the soundtrack for Cuphead, by Kristofer Maddigan, is pretty great. New old-fashioned jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Scraps:

It's one of my favorite 2017 albums.
Avatar 12:49pm Mayuko:

Any word that ends with "scope" must be the coolest thing, whatever you guys are talking about.
Avatar 12:50pm fred:

That's a very nice Jim O'Rourke track
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

@Scraps sounds like a fun way to watch Fantasia for sure!!! if it were Dumbo it could have triggered some bad trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Scraps:

Oooh, I love elephants, and I would def. not watch Dumbo on acid.
Avatar 12:53pm Mayuko:

@fred yet enother Debussy-Reich-like track!
Avatar 12:53pm Mayuko:

@Scraps Haha!
Avatar 12:53pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko, these images may help. Eadweard Muybridge was arguably the first person to make moving images. It is doubtful that it was to prove that all four horses hooves leave the ground at some point when it gallops for a bet.
  12:54pm rw:

Mayuko, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotoscoping#/media/File:US_patent_1242674_figure_3.png It's a projection device for making hand drawing from live action films.
Avatar 12:54pm Brian in UK:

Ofcourse horses do not bet. Generally.
  12:55pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko very close, they originated in Madison and then departed for the Big Apple
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Scraps:

Rotoscope has bad reactions in my head, mostly because I love animation, and I hate Ralph Bakshi and what he did to Tolkein (among other things)
  12:57pm rbrt:

pigeons eating trash lol
  12:57pm rbrt:

pre- Happy New Year everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

LOL, funny you mention puffy pigeons; I was at WFMU 2 Thursdays ago, one of the first bitter cold days this month, and I took some pictures of puffy pigeons in Exchange Place.
Avatar 12:59pm fred:

@Brian in UK: One of my fave doubtful stories is that Mandelbrot added his "B." middle initial later in life to stand for "Benoit B. Mandelbrot"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

Nick Drake always feels right for cold, snowy days.
Avatar 1:06pm fred:

I think Ryuichi Sakamoto likes Debussy. He'll be playing in Paris in March, tickets should become available in the coming week. I hope I'll be able to get one
Avatar 1:08pm Brian in UK:

fred I like doubtful stories.
Got to get in the kitchen and cook some makerel.

Hope everyone has a healthy and peaceful New Year.
Avatar 1:09pm Mayuko:

@rw @Brian Ohhh, those ARE really cool thing. Zoopraxiscope is like zoetrope!
Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

you too, Brian!
  1:11pm rbrt:

I could of listened to the Pajaro Canzani all afternoon, warm vibes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Scraps:

oh, John Lewis! excellent
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

Happy 2018 to you too, rbrt!!! Love that new avatar!
Avatar 1:12pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko, yes very similar principle.
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

james, i agree & that's why I thought of playing Nick Drake! and Man in a shed is possibly the song I love the most!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm listener james from westwood:

Brian, you'll see 2018 before the colonies; ask it to be kind to both our realms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Webhamster Henry:

Rotoscope is used in almost every movie now, often automatic, but also manually, to move mattes with film elements which cannot otherwise be isolated via green screens.
But the interesting Fleischer patent would be for the "setback camera", where the cells are photographed in front of rotating modeled background as seen in a few of their shorts and features.
  1:17pm mzzmz:

meanwhile 'm reading GP motorcycle history book that's long been due...
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

I will def look into that Rotoscope system thing more after my show!
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

what's "GP" motorcycle, mzz??
  1:25pm Rickwaukee:

Wondering if there are ambient crowd noise recordings for agoraphobics or for people who gave up on the bar scene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Fleischer fans can drool over these posts on the late Michael Sporn's blog, which was alway overflowing with great material:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Ike:

Good snowy afternoon, y'all!
Avatar 1:29pm fred:

Satomimagae reminded me of early Cat Power, not a bad thing at all
  1:30pm rbrt:

fred yeah!
Avatar 1:31pm Mayuko:

Hey Ike!
  1:31pm rbrt:

I enjoy a nice acoustic guitar and atmosphere
  1:32pm mzzmz:

grand prix. 1m reading at 1978 now (from 1949)
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

Satomi reminds me of Fonal Records stuff. I dunno anything about Cat Power but hope she'd be happy with that!
  1:33pm rbrt:

*rolls in the snow*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Heh, already had this track starred. It's a good'un.
Avatar 1:35pm Mayuko:

@mzz ahh, like F-1 grand prix! Cool! Not that I know anything about it more than what I learned from video games, haha.
  1:36pm Rickwaukee:

Doesn't get much more shimmery than this
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@james yah, I see now in the system that it's got liked so many times!!

That was exactly my thought, Rickwaukee!
  1:39pm Rickwaukee:

I'm picturing when the sun is getting low in the fall and it casts the shadows of all the shaky leaves onto the shade in the window and walls of my bathroom
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

Sounds like you got the best bathroom in the world!
  1:40pm Rickwaukee:

Ha ha - yes for a few weeks every year
  1:41pm rbrt:

  1:41pm Rickwaukee:

I have had thoughts of creating rooms like it and charging admission / suggested donation
  1:42pm Polyus:

Wow what a magnificent piece of music this is!
  1:42pm Rickwaukee:

Like the grand hippy light shows of yore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm listener james from westwood:

Singer has a Bandcamp page for this track: clairemsinger.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

Hey Polyus! Happy to have you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I have an idea for a new and exciting New Year's Eve tradition: Go into the kitchen cabinets and pull out the oldest item and eat it. Nutritious and practical!
  1:50pm rw:

KFHP, I have a friend who got hooked on crystal meth a while back. He didn't leave the house for two years. He said, "You know all that food in the back of your cabinets that you wonder if you'll ever eat it? I ate it".
  1:50pm rbrt:

  1:50pm Rickwaukee:

Careful with canned salmon, folks
  1:51pm rbrt:

(to clarify I was not laughing at the person hooked on meth)

Hi, @Mayuko!
  1:52pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko! Glad I was able to catch your last show of 2017! Happy New Year everybody!

Scraps, check out the Cuphead graphics. You'll like them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

My parents tried to fob 6-year-old microwave popcorn off on me once. I asked them if they were really that hard up for my life insurance money and if they needed a ten-spot till payday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Scraps:

whoops, now 7!
  1:53pm Mayuko:

I am in serious peril. Help me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Scraps:

@rw, okay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm listener james from westwood:

LOL at "douchebag"!! Yes, his films are ... not great. It's like a reverse Highlander thing: the more films he made, the weaker he got. Best to stick with the soundtracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah, have to use some common sense on what's in the cabinets. If the can is all swelled up and warm to the touch, DON'T EAT IT!
  1:54pm rbrt:

never thought elvis would be closing out the year lol
  1:55pm Mayoku:

It is too late. I have been defeated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm listener james from westwood:

Just being able to say "happy new year" and not getting static from shitheads who got frothy over my saying "happy holidays" has been a deep breath of fresh air.
Mayuko, your philosophy is a winning one. A rightly placed heart for us all in 2018!
  1:56pm Rickwaukee:

A little more bite and a little less bar,
A little less fight and a little more spark
