Good afternoon Mayuko, Alessandro and listeners

hello hello~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko & Mayukolings

Told the kids to cover their ears, if I had any
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Thanks for being here, fred, Sem, gloomsday and coelacanth∅! Glad to be baaack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

In since the start and happy to have been here! Welcome back, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

Wow! That . . . is one track title that definitely wouldn't fly on the station's air signal!
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

It's wonderful to be on the webstream out of FCC rules, Rickwaukee!
  12:07pm Rickwaukee:

"There's a penguin on the telly!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm coelacanth∅:

this sound like some neighbors i had once, across the hall where i used to live.
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

Welcome, james! So happy to be back here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

Schoolmates asked me what that word meant, and tried to get me to ask the teacher. From their tone of voice and snickering, I knew that was a bad idea.
So I waited until I got home and asked my mom. She, to her credit, calmly and accurately defined it, then asked me where I'd heard it. In all she handled it quite well, better than if she'd heard me using it. (By this point she'd already played the very explicit "Hair" original cast soundtrack and answered my questions about that show's language, so I guess it wasn't too much of a stretch.)
  12:11pm Rickwaukee:

Autogas is the worst - especially on long trips with the windows up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm coelacanth∅:

i would've been within a 1/2 inch of getting hit just for asking
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

coelacanth∅, my current neighbor is pretty aggressive too. Running around banging walls, screaming F word and N word, playing music full blast with his door open. There was a time he was screaming FUCK HALLOWEEN!!!!! I dunno why, halloween is the best.
Thank god he plays good music.
  12:19pm rw:

Mayuko, are you my next door neighbor?
  12:19pm Rickwaukee:

"Thank god he plays good music." -love this, all is forgiven lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Yvang:

If I had a neighbour like me, listening to FMU loudly all the time, it would drive me mad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm coelacanth∅:

yes and surprising he plays good music! is he really angry or is he just some spoiled kid pretending to be all angsty?
Avatar 12:24pm Mayuko:

@rw oh no!!!!!!
Avatar 12:26pm fred:

@Yvang: I guess it would: when you stop the radio you would keep hearing it and that would be unsettling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

Hah, I am that FMU-playing neighbor! Although my volume is usually reasonable, and my surrounding tenants of variably impaired hearing.
BUT: I did blast George Michael's "Freedom '90" when Mayuko played it last year. Had to celebrate alongside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm doctorjazz:

Quick hi, off on dog walk, catch up with the comments when I can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm gloomsday:

surprise pixies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Yvang:

Is this me or this Dead by Pixies sounds like The Fall?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

TBH I thought it was The Fall at first, too. So many Fall tracks I haven't heard, I figured it was yet one more new one to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Yvang:

@Fred: Unless he's listening to the main stream while I l am listening to Give the drummer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm coelacanth∅:

i've never gotten a noise complaint, but my bedroom has nobody else's living area bordering it.
at my old apartment which was a closer situation i only twice in 11 years got a noise complaint. once was black sabbath and once, mogwai. i literally had things vibrating off my shelves!

Avatar 12:36pm Jeff Moore:

Mayuko makes Saturday much better!
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Yvang! At WFMU we're aware of the trouble we're causing for our listeners' neighbors, however even that bad Whitehouse I played is better than the current White house!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

Mayuko you should ask your neighbor why he wants to fuck halloween; but only after you've made some recordings of his rantings.
Avatar 12:38pm fred:

I like this Datetenryu track
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ he is not young. I think in his late 40's. Drinks too much, I see gazillions of beer/liquor bottles every week.
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

@james George Michael's Freedom 90 full blast! That is so sweet of you!!

Hallos doctorjazz! Happy dog walking & thanks for stopping by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

This Datetenryu is a-mazing.
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

Wow, Jeff! Good afternoon & thanks for listening!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm doctorjazz:

I get noise complaints, usually from my family...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: I have backstory on that track from around its release, too, so it was a great moment to celebrate with you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm coelacanth∅:

oh, that's worse. that's like my former neighbor. (well, one of her boyfriends actually) it sucked but i did get some disturbing yet amusing recordings from it!
-and yes. i, for one, am not offended by that word or that track; i'm infinitely offended by our government.
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ recording him would be funny, but also there could be a day I have to talk over him in my mic break in future, depends on the timing.
Avatar 12:43pm fred:

I've been looking at Kawanabe Kyosai's work since the start of the show. There's some pretty great stuff, and diverse too
  12:43pm rw:

I have a good story about seeing Whitehouse that’s too long to tell here.
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

I love the fact that organ is the main thing of this prog band Datetenryu.
  12:45pm rw:

I used to work for a guy who had a really scary recording of his neighbor screaming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

Skeleton Shamisen Player in Top Hat With Dancing Monster is bizarre and awesome
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

oh yes, Kawanabe Kyosai is amazing!
Avatar 12:49pm Mayuko:

Now I am really curious to hear all these neighbor screaming recordings! Maybe we can make a compilation together!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm coelacanth∅:

my present neighbor on the first floor (next to me but i don't hear anything through the walls) was freaking out outside my window last autumn, about ? -saying "i can't Fucking take it",slightly varying his emphasis throughout, over & over at least 20-30 times.
i wish i'd recorded that.
  12:51pm rw:

I wonder if he still has them. Really scary. Blood curdling screams in the middle of the night. Pretty sad, actually, to imagine what must have been going on in her mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm doctorjazz:

Tough set, aural assault (in a good way).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

this track!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: Former FMU DJ Kenny G absolutely would've made such a scream compilation one of his Marathon premiums!
  12:54pm Rickwaukee:

1971 all over it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Webhamster Henry:

I always answer "How are you" too accurately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

i had loud neighbors downstairs from me who were loud in a good way. loud lovemaking (mostly her); loud laughter; loud, but not too loud happy conversation; not loud, but audible decent acoustic guitar playing with a smooth baritone voice singing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

Sorry to hear about the depression; this season with the scant sunlight doesn't help a whole lot, either. And oddly, severe anxiety can spark actual vertigo for me (benign positional vertigo). Glad the superb tracks today are helping with the cloudy mental weather!
  1:04pm Ivan:

I hate answering "how are you" it's like you are being forced to lie.. but it's great to hear you on the stream again
Avatar 1:06pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko, never seen a shamisen played like that.
Avatar 1:06pm Brian in UK:

fred are you managing to stay dry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm coelacanth∅:

people act like "cunt" is the worst word, but it's just a word. i think it's because of the actual sound of it - starting with "K", ending with "T", it's a harsh sound.
...and then some people pretend it's sexist -but that's another story.
are there words that are considered harshly offensive in japan?
  1:08pm rw:

Mayuko, you’re amazing!!!
Avatar 1:08pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko where are my manners. Good afternoon.
  1:10pm Ivan:

You are an amazing person Mayuko!!
  1:12pm rw:

I think January is just kind of depressing, coming after the holidays and settling back to the routine. Still kind of dark and cold. Exercise helps me.
Avatar 1:12pm fred:

@Brian: Well, the rain is annoying but I've been quite lucky so far. It conveniently stopped whenever I had to walk back home after a late show made me miss the last bus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Yvang:

Maybe people in these support groups expect to hear a certain type of redemption stories and are disappointed if you don't follow this rule.
  1:14pm rw:

Speaking of, I’m building a bicycle wheel and it’s not cooperating. I’m about to start screaming if anyone’s got a tape recorder.
Avatar 1:14pm Brian in UK:

fred, London seems to have moved into the Twentieth Century with Night buses and trains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

This video came out in 1999, I see. Interesting re: support groups, b/c that's the same year the movie of the novel "Fight Club" came out, in which support groups featured as a catalyst for the eventual development of said clubs in the film.
  1:16pm Rickwaukee:

Back in olden times, people greeted each other with "How do you do?" and it was NEVER meant to be answered with anything other than "How do you do?" right back. I think you can get away with not saying anything in reply to "How are you" - or just answer "hello" - falls under "it's just an expression" - although I always like replying, "not so good" or "I've been better" and then wait for the awkward silence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm doctorjazz:

Some people find "light therapy" helpful for winter blues-pretty simple, inexpensive (less expensive than therapy), no side effects (like medication), probably pairs very well with aggressive music.

Avatar 1:19pm Brian in UK:

Thursday was a day without rain and the clarity of the light was impeccable. You could see a blade of grass at two hundred paces. Well you get my drift.
  1:19pm rw:

I feel like it’s fine to reply with, “lm okay, thanks. You?” Maybe not every time though.
Avatar 1:19pm Brian in UK:

Sunshine lifts the spirits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm coelacanth∅:

what drj said, +excercise outside. bundle up.
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

Haha, thank you for the supplementary "amazing person"!
Good afternoon, Brian!
  1:21pm Alessandro from italy:

wow... the Heart of This Heat !!
Avatar 1:21pm fred:

@Rickwaukee: We have the same thing in france ("ça va?" should be answered by "et toi?", answer optional). I've had fun answering "no" ("ça va?" translates to "are you fine?") with a smile. Nobody notices because nobody cares about the answer. Does that make it a rhetorical question?
  1:21pm Rickwaukee:

Weather/winter really can do a number on you. I don't mind a couple days of sun, but I've come to the point where I prefer clouds and gray - because extended sunshine doesn't jibe with my insides and seems to be mocking me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

i often reply "good enough" but in a cheerful way, to varying degrees. some people understand me and others think i'm being pessimistic. whatever.
Avatar 1:22pm Brian in UK:

I rarely ask "How are you?" because I doubt whether they will answer honestly. And ofcourse whether I am interested.
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@Yvang yeah, I think you're right, in any place there's certain expectation among people which I believed I had met but apparently not, haha. They were all nice and their stories were very moving though, I have so much respect towards all of those people. It was a good experience.
  1:24pm Rickwaukee:

@fred: rhetorical is when the answer is obvious or needs not be stated - so rhetorical but with a who cares kicker ??
Avatar 1:24pm Jeff Moore:

I'm saddened and annoyed with those people in that singularly unsupportive "support group". You deserve better.

And your way of speaking is thoroughly engaging to anyone who actually listens.
Avatar 1:25pm fred:

Souffle Continu (translates to "circular breathing") is one of the good record stores in Paris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

i ask how are you if i really am prepared to hear how the person is; and i usually am. sometimes i just say "hi". if i really don't want to engage with a particular person i just nod.
Avatar 1:26pm Brian in UK:

@Jeff I agree.
  1:26pm Rickwaukee:

In the midst of depression some goofy silly thing in a TV show or movie, usually something I've previously seen/heard, will make me laugh and remind me of the light - I always think I should make note of them and administer them to myself when needed, but I never do - it is fun to stumble across them - perhaps greater relief that way ??
Avatar 1:27pm Jeff Moore:

If I ask how you are and you choose to actually answer the question truthfully sometimes, I will not be offended.
Avatar 1:29pm Brian in UK:

@Jeff but you have got to want to know if you ask the question or at least be prepared to listen to the answer.
Avatar 1:30pm Brian in UK:

Jeff by the by, any fill-ins lined up?
  1:31pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko: I have a hard time believing anyone else in that group expressed themselves as fully as you - they maybe used simple or cliche answers that were easier for others to digest. I love digesting your steam of thought - and you do *Amazingly* well for a non-native speaker. I am so sorry you were so down as to miss a show. Good you knew to take a break to care for yourself!
Avatar 1:32pm fred:

@Mayuko: It takes a special gig to make me miss your show. Yours is one of the rare shows that can make me skip live music. Sadly, Sonic Protest is at the same time as the marathon this year
Avatar 1:33pm Brian in UK:

When is the Marathon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Yvang:

@Fred:don't forget that every show is archived : one of the most incredible feature of this incredible radio station.
  1:37pm rw:

I may have to cut out a little early. Always happy to catch the Vertigo in real time. Nice hanging with y’all this morning. Mayuko, sorry to hear you’ve been feeling down. If it’s any consolation I think depression can end up being a good motivator if it isn’t too debilitating. This show for example! Thanks as always for your amazing contribution!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Yvang:

not every show but almost...
Avatar 1:38pm Jeff Moore:

@Brian Over There: no fill-ins for me 'til after the Marathon (which is Sunday, March 4th (starting at noon) to Sunday, March 18th). Thanks for asking!
Avatar 1:39pm fred:

@Yvang: I know, but hate to miss the fun and the opportunity to pledge live to this show
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

Wow, thank you for all the kind words. And yeah, I'm ok or alright is a good answer, my boss who I really like always answers "can't complain'. It's just a little funny that EVERYONE knows that sometimes people have hard times and difficult issues and yet it seem to sound like breaking news whenever someone mentions it.
Avatar 1:41pm Brian in UK:

Cheers Jeff. Let the mayhem begin. I may be moving house around then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good day, Mayuko and playbots. Checking in today from the sunny slopes of Bellayre Mountain. Too bad I skipped quads day at the gym, along with all the other muscle groups for that matter. I am not too good at snowboarding.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, Karen Dalton!
Avatar 1:48pm Brian in UK:

Now I want to tell the group my stomach is rumbling, time for tea.
Thanks Mayuko. Chin up as we say over here.
Avatar 1:49pm Mayuko:

Thank you, Brian, for listening & kind words! Enjoy your tea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm doctorjazz:

I suspect the intention at the group wasn't to be unsupportive (though, since I wasn't there and don't know them, I'm just guessing). I'd guess it was more what happens sometimes at a concert or other performance, when the audience is so struck and moved and/or stunned that there is just silence at the end. If it's too raw, sometimes people just don't know how to deal with it (but, it could just be that the group sucked). Well, hoping you feel good, Mayuko, certainly love hearing your musings and feelings on the Stream!
(this half of the show is as soothing as the 1st half was aggressive, great!)
Avatar 1:51pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

hey, listener james - i had meniere's syndrome to a debilitating degree. was told nobody had a clue what caused it, it'd gradually get worse, i'd gradually lose my hearing. so i did some research and started controlling my blood sugar, using blackstrap molasses, chromium, copper, manganese; getting weekly chiropractic adjustments; getting more exercise and stretching every day. it got to a steady slight dizziness i could live with, though not happily. then i had one acupuncture treatment and within a day i had no symptoms. for about 10 years now i get some minor symptoms for a few weeks every year, usually in july. that's it. maybe this can help.
Avatar 1:57pm fred:

Now that you broadcast from home, it means you can have ice cream during the show!
  1:57pm rw:

I understand that nobody cares, but I’m feeling better about this bicycle wheel. Still a way to go but it’s looking promising. Or maybe it’s just the music. Take care everyone and thanks again Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm coelacanth∅:

(sorry for long posts that are of no concern to most people)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm listener james from westwood:

@coelacanth∅: Au contraire, thanks most kindly for sharing your experience of that syndrome. So glad you were able to find a therapy that worked for you. It can be so frustrating finding the right combination of what works, especially when doctors don't have experience with a condition and can't offer solid answers.
Avatar 2:04pm Sem:

Thanks, Mayuko, for things I would never have heard anywhere else. Love your show. See you and all next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: We are ~here~ for all weird shit. And I wish I'd been able to attend this year; big gatherings in snug spaces sometimes trigger anxiety on my side and, yes, the aforementioned vertigo!
