I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Scraps:

H’lo hey my radio family & friend. Listening in, though I probably am lying down mostly. Cheers, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko, Scraps, and all!
Avatar 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and all. So nice to see you here, Scraps
Avatar 12:01pm Sem:

Hello, Mayuko, Scraps, ljfw, and fred.
Avatar 12:03pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, my radio family Scraps! Welcome, james, fred, and Sem! Happy to have you here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Webhamster Henry:

Good afternoon Mayuko!
Avatar 12:03pm northguineahills:

*thud* I made it on time! *ow*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Webhamster Henry:

I wish I knew Korean.
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Yay, northguineahills! Webhamster Henry, me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Gary:

Avatar 12:07pm fred:

@Henry: Hangul is a fascinating script, though I don't know the language at all (I'm something of a unicode nerd)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm redkayak:

Hello all :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Webhamster Henry:

I did a project 25 years ago which involved using Hangul - and I love Korean food so I've seen a lot of menus - but I forgot it all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Webhamster Henry:

It was for an exhibit at the Taejon Science Expo '93, in the renamed Daejon Korea. jdpecon.com/expo/wftaejon1993.html
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

As far as I could tell from the Japanese subtitle in the music video for that Korean song, my impression of the lyrics was like it was illustrating an everyday life and the world breaking apart a little by little, in a subtle way even without knowing - it was rather movie-like, with small sketches of family etc, I guess not surprising since Lang Lee is also a film maker.
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Gary! And redkayak!!

Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

学生?!?! We're all students of life indeed!?
Avatar 12:19pm northguineahills:

I regret never seeing any Noh theater in Japan. But I did see Kabuki.
Avatar 12:21pm fred:

This week I saw (yet another) great performance by the Nature Theater of Oklahoma. Since they're based in NY, I thought I'd give them praise here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm maestroso:

Hello Mayuko! I'm about to drive thirty minutes to a record store and will have your show on in the car.
  12:23pm rbrt:

hi hi
  12:24pm rbrt:

☆ Stangentanz
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

Me neither, northguineahills. I only recently came to aware how truly meaningful this art of Noh is. Aging helps!
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

Hi maestroso! drive safe and thanks for listening! Welcome on board, rbrt!
  12:27pm rbrt:

thanks! great songs!
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

I'm recently more in the mood for theater performances than ever, I'll check those guys out fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Webhamster Henry:

I visited the Bertoia Barn many years ago!
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

About the yoroboshi mask www.google.com...
  12:32pm rbrt:

I didn't know there is a "google arts and culture"
Avatar 12:34pm fred:

@Mayuko: Theirs are not typical theater performances though. This week's had a western setting with cowboys drinking, playing, fighting (with video game sound effects) while talking about depression, divorce, specism, and Thoreau. And that was only the first part
  12:34pm rbrt:

really into these masks
Avatar 12:36pm fred:

"google arts and culture" sounds vaguely ominous to me
Also, that Harry Bertoia track is great
  12:38pm rbrt:

yeah fred unfortunately I kind of don't like the sound of it either, but it is nicely done
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

@Henry oh wow! are you allowed play his sound sculptures there or just to see?
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

@fred that description of the show sounds good to me!
  12:41pm rbrt:

I could spend all day in that barn wooooshing all the metal pieces around
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Mark Hurst:

Hi Mayuko! And W.Henry, ngh, james et al!
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

Hi Mark! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@rbrt me too! and wake up the next morning with muscle ache.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Mark Hurst:

BTW thanks for your mention of movie night on last week's show. We had a fun time in Monty Hall last Saturday - the "Road Movie" documentary was pretty wild.
Avatar 12:51pm fred:

Clicky-star for that Varkenshond track too
  12:52pm melinda:

Hi Mayuko and people
  12:53pm rbrt:

this was a great video of some of the sound sculptures being played:
  12:53pm rbrt:

hi melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good afternoon, Mayuko and 'goers. Here's a good dose of vertigo from someone riding a skeleton thingy down the chute: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Webhamster Henry:

His son Val runs the barn. It's in a very small town: Bally, PA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

The Somnambients are being reissued - there were lots of recordings, all improvised. Val restores his father's sculptures/instruments, and has some of his own.
Avatar 12:56pm Dervish:

Sounding great, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Webhamster Henry:

  12:57pm Suzi:

Play Vertigo makes my Saturday.
  12:58pm melinda:

I have to get up from my nap sofa now so I can go google bertoia barn. Or rather, duck duck go.
  1:00pm rbrt:

  1:01pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:04pm fred:

That's also what makes WFMU so precious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm melinda:

This is really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm mauri:

the folk crusaiders takes me to spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Webhamster Henry:

This is a tune called Hard Times Come Again No More by Stephen Foster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Webhamster Henry:

Which has some pretty relevant lyrics.
  1:10pm rbrt:

I kind of like it without the vocals too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm melinda:

I like this version of Hard Times.
Avatar 1:10pm Mayuko:

@Mark From a photo I saw looked like it was packed! Would've been nice if I could make it too, but there were 2 birthday celebrations happening that evening...
Avatar 1:12pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko and Weekend Dreamers.
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda, Ken, Dervish and Suzi! Thank you so much for tuning in!!
Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

Now I'd love to visit Bally, Henry! I'll look up the location after my show! I'm practicing driving now so maybe I can drive myself there when it gets warmer!
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

Hi mauri! It really does sound like spring! Hallos Brian in UK!
  1:22pm rw:

Hello! What did I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm listener james from westwood:

Stringed instruments getting some love in this fine set!
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

@rw You missed some North Korean propaganda song's copyright being violated. Glad to have you here in any case!
& Hallos james!!!
  1:28pm rbrt:

shit are we all getting copyright infringement notices from North Korea now
Avatar 1:29pm Mayuko:

This raga stuff is 25 minutes long but it's such a beautiful one it's so hard to tear myself away from it.
  1:30pm Barnaby:

Sounding great again. Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar 1:31pm fred:

@Mayuko: you don't have to, it's WFMU
  1:32pm rw:

Hey Mayuko, I’ll check it out later. Yeah, I was going to say that whatever I missed couldn’t have been more beautiful than this.
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

@rbrt I thought it was funny too but when it happened it was not very funny, the record company couldn't even release it I think. Only officially came out in 21st century it seemed.
Avatar 1:33pm Brian in UK:

As a contrast to the Khmer Rouge LP title, this is the chorus from Smile by K'Naan.

(Smile) When you're struggllin' (Smile) When you're in jail
(Smile) When you dead broke (Smile) And the rent's due
(Smile) You ain't got friends now (Smile) And no one knows you
Never let 'em see you down, smile while you bleedin'
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

Thank YOU Barnaby, happy to have you here!
  1:35pm rbrt:

@Mayuko yeah I know that's terrible :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm melinda:

I don't mind when ragas go on and on.
Avatar 1:37pm Brian in UK:

"This raga stuff" is just right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, I also like the occasional Bryce raga-fests.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm listener james from westwood:

Occasionally my fellow editors and proofers will discuss what we like on in the background while we work, and ragas are a big fave for me.
  1:45pm rw:

Is it marathon time already? I think I've got some quarters in a jar somewhere...
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

@james It somehow makes me really focus, so I can see how it's good to have it while work.
Avatar 1:46pm Brian in UK:

Raga is demanding without being consuming. Does that make sense?
Avatar 1:48pm Sem:

Had to pipe up about that last one. Consumed w/ pleasure it was, Mayuko.
Avatar 1:49pm Mayuko:

It's soon marathon time already, indeed! Speaking of raga, one of my co-hosts this year is scheduled to be the raga-fest master Bryce, though I'll see if that'll be confirmed. It'll be fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yaaargh! The Olympics coverage on TV just showed a helmet-cam video of someone riding down the skeleton hill. It was fun trying to get a feeling of vertigo watching HD television.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm mauri:

Sem, are there Canadian snowshovelin songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wow, yes! Bryce will be wonderful! I hope that comes to pass.
  1:57pm mzzm:

Hi Mayu, tuned in late, I'll play it back later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh! You and Bryce will make a good pair!
Taking you on the mobile for the last bit of musical wonder, so thanking you now while I'm at the computer!
  1:59pm Rickwaukee:

Thank you for another pleasing 2 hours, Mayuko.
Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

Ah! Thanks for listening, Rickwaukee!!
Avatar 2:01pm Mayuko:

Hey mzzm!
Have nice rest of the weekend, james!
  2:02pm Rickwaukee:

You know I love me some 'guese
  2:02pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!
Avatar 2:02pm Sem:

Hi, @mauri, just in from the garden. Well, we adapted some of the old coureur-de-bois songs, paddling songs of the French explorers and traders who traveled west, west, and more west, wherever the waters went ( or came from.) Rugged bunch, like Vikings in a way, I guess.
  2:02pm rw:

Thanks Mayuko! It's always nice to catch a bit of live Vertigo.
  2:02pm rbrt:

oh man 2 already!
Avatar 2:03pm Brian in UK:

Thanks, Mayuko. Good weekend all.
  2:03pm JakeGould:

I hope Bryce gets a new broken fan to play during the show!
Avatar 2:03pm Sem:

Damn. Thanks, Mayuko, all, catch you once again next week.
Avatar 2:04pm northguineahills:

Ack, missed the Bosavi People of New Guinea (might be related to my interests).
  2:08pm rbrt:

thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Mark Hurst:

Great show, Mayuko, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Webhamster Henry:

Well that went by quickly! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. Enjoy the week.
Avatar 2:10pm Mayuko:
