I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

h’lo h’m h’mm.

trying to keep awake. cheers.
Avatar 11:55am Mayuko:

Good morning, my radio family Scraps! Dozing off is actually an appropriate way to listen to today's show. You'll see what I mean (if you're awake then, haha.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Good day, Mayuko, Scraps, and all! I woke up thinking about listening to today's episode!
Avatar 12:02pm fred:

Hello Mayuko and fellow listeners. Did you watch the movie since last week?
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Welcome, james! Great to have you here, as always.
Avatar 12:03pm Mayuko:

hellos, my radio family fred! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm redkayak:

Hi everyone :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm maestroso:

Hallo Mayuko, nice to hear you again!
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, redkayak, and maestroso! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm redkayak:

Ahoy, Mayuko! Just paddling through......
Avatar 12:07pm fred:

I plan to watch it tomorrow. I was too busy this week: 6 shows in 5 days
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Paddling through is another very appropriate way to listen to today's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm redkayak:

Indeed :)
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

@fred 6 shows in 5 days?!?!?!? How is that even possible?
Avatar 12:20pm Dave B:

Hey there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm maestroso:

Oh wow, Jun Togawa is in the film.
Avatar 12:27pm fred:

Easy really: Joe McPhee on Monday, a dance/text performance on Tuesday then rushing to a concert, another dance show on Thursday, a dance show then a concert yesterday. See, I didn't even do anything on Wednesday (and got home just in time for Ridgewood Radio)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm tmoyo:

Hi Mayuko and listeners!
Avatar 12:35pm Mayuko:

Hellos, Dave B!
Yes, maestroso! She's such a weirdo in and out of the film (complimenting)
Avatar 12:36pm Mayuko:

@fred You are crazy (complimenting)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mayuko and Drummer denizens.
Avatar 12:38pm fred:

This soundtrack is amazing! I haven't seen a movie in over ten years, I guess it's time to break that streak
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

tmoyo! Daylight saving time seems to help me getting you on live :)
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

The original of this song is from 1956, protesting against post-war US occupation.
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

Welcome, Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tmoyo:

YES! Mayuko. getting out from hibernation.
I've never seen this film, but remember seeing the sequel "Untamagiru" in college.
Avatar 12:43pm Jeff Moore:

Great show, as usual.

And I actually remembered to listen live this time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm tmoyo:

Well maybe not a sequel, but seems to have the same characters and actors.
Avatar 12:45pm fred:

I'm already clicky-starring the whole show
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo yeah, Untamagiru! it does seem to be a kind of sequel. I might have to rob Japan Society if they have it, never have watched it! I saw a doc film of Rinsho Kadekaru that he directed though. which was pretty interesting.
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

Hi Jeff! So happy to have you tune in live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Jаson:

Bah, just got in, see there's lots to catch up on later... hi all
Avatar 12:56pm northguineahills:

Saw Paradise View last Saturday, Gracias Mayuko y Jason!
Avatar 12:56pm Mayuko:

Jason!!! I watched the film and so this show had to happen!!!!!! Huge thanks!!!
Avatar 12:57pm Mayuko:

Hey northguineahills! That movie was really interesting wasn't it!
Avatar 1:00pm Dave B:

Thanks Mayuko. I might just watch that in flight tonight. If you have a NYPL card, they have a free streaming service you can sign up for - Kanopy.... Pretty good selection - they are trying to compete with my library!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Jаson:

I think that was the first time on film I've seen any reference to Okinawan independence (or nationhood).
Avatar 1:06pm northguineahills:

@Dave: (My NYPL card just expired, will try to get it renewed in May when I visit again [my name is still on my wife's utilities]).
Avatar 1:06pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Paradised View took place right before the handover to the Japanese handover.
Avatar 1:07pm northguineahills:

The reason the roads in Okwinawa are wide, b/c they were built by the Americans after the war (they drove on the right side of the road until the handover)
Avatar 1:12pm northguineahills:

60% of all US military forces in Japan are in Okwinawa, the main contingency is Kadena AFB, as it's located in downtown Naha.

The number plate system is the same for all gaijins, not just American military personnel.

As of last year, all American military personnel are forbidden to consume alcohol, How they enforce that??? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Avatar 1:13pm northguineahills:

I was at NAF Atsugi due to my father's deployment (in Kanagawa-ken, b/yn Tokyo and Yokohama).
Avatar 1:17pm fred:

DJ ALF was stationed in Okinawa. He told me so after I asked him about what I thought was a distinct Okinawa rhythm on one of his tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

A long-ago girlfriend of mine going through rough psychological stuff went thru a stretch before we got together of just going home from work and going straight to bed. She slept for well over 8 hr a night couldn't get enough of it.
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

Don't forget kanas (jiangshi) (hopping vampires)
  1:25pm rbrt:

I was just listening to this yesterday! love this
Avatar 1:25pm Dave B:

I've always wanted to visit Okinawa, and might just do so but I'm curious how gaijin are perceived there? Has the military presence ruined it for everyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm tmoyo:

I remember watching this film on VHS at home, with all the lights off, getting so absorbed in it and in the final scene, the phone rings... sigh.
  1:28pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

@ngh ha, interesting re: number plates I guess Y numbers is associated with the base is probably just because there're many of them around the bases.
Avatar 1:30pm Mayuko:

@james yeah! things like that case of your girlfriend makes perfect sense to me and exactly what I was referring to!
Avatar 1:30pm Mayuko:

Hellos, rbrt, glad to have you here!
  1:35pm ?:

Checking in to get my Vertigo credit. Hey everyone. Thanks Mayuko! I've missed most of the mic breaks but the music's sounding good!
  1:35pm rw:

Hang on. How am I going to get credit if I forget to add my name?
  1:35pm rbrt:

hi! that was rude didn’t even say hello I got excited lol
Avatar 1:36pm fred:

That Blake reference reminds me of how I loved the Blake Babies years ago. I still do
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@Dave B people there are used to having people from different countries in their everyday life. I had many coworkers from Okinawa at a place I worked at in Tokyo and it was interesting to hear about Okinawa from them. The conflicts there are real but it's not about xenophobia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Scraps (sparcS):

(lying down & listening [as usual lately], but awake. awake! cheers)
Avatar 1:38pm Dave B:

Thanks Mayuko... That be my next big vacation.
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

The music is the important part! Hallos rw!!
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

Cheers, Scraps!!
Avatar 1:42pm fred:

If I ever travel, Okinawa would be second on my list. Jersey City would be first. I know why it comes first, but it still sounds funny
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo phone rings at the end of that film sucks, but I might actually appreciate it because I always feel sad and left alone when a movie ends. Phone conversation would help me get back to the world of mortals!
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

Jersey City does not sound as exciting as Okinawa for sure, haha.
Avatar 1:49pm Mayuko:

@Dave B I hope you will bring back lots of Sata andagi for me, Okinawa donuts. So good!!!
Avatar 1:49pm northguineahills:

When I was in Japan, there was a rumor that jiko-shiki plates (illuminated green plates) were for those convicted of DUI. It wasn't until right before I left I found out it was a myth.
Avatar 1:51pm northguineahills:

@fred: You're rather strange, that's why we love you (I've been to Jersey City and let's just say (very little on the subject).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm tmoyo:

Yeah, phone calls do save you from gloomy situations. I once picked a super bad 大凶 omikuji (fortune cookie type of thing ), basically saying "you will die alone!" and a friend called me right after and lifted my spirits.
Avatar 1:55pm northguineahills:

sad to say I missed the Dead Man NY, (I love that sndtrk).
  1:55pm mzmzzm:

Hi Mayu, tuned in late I will play it back later. btw Don Sutherland was one of my favorite actor eventhough he appeared in many B movies. I thought his bast performance was "Mr. X" in Oliver Stone JFK.
Avatar 1:56pm fred:

@NGH: WFMU is there, that's more than enough a contribution to the world as far as I'm concerned. Idle talk anyway, there's no chance I can ever afford to travel: that would mean spending money on that instead of giving it to the station
Avatar 1:58pm northguineahills:

I know fred, and you'll be a stone's throw from what's left of NYC.
Avatar 1:59pm fred:

@mzmzzm: He was in Kate Bush's Cloudbusting video!
Avatar 1:59pm Mayuko:

@ngh It's so interesting even that there's such rumor existed. Feels like that shows how much things are handled in a pretty unclear way.

Jersey City is at least clean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm tmoyo:

@mzmzzm: I love Donald Sutherland!! MASH & Klute are probably my favorite.
  2:00pm mzmzzm:

that what I came in. he's great in there too. of cause kate....
Avatar 2:01pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo I hope you didn't get it at Asakusa temple, my former neighbor. They're known to be pretty harsh when it comes to fortune telling, never sugar coated. They've of course given me the worst omikuji too.
Avatar 2:01pm Mayuko:

Hey mzmzzm! Think you'll enjoy since I think you've been to Okinawa too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm tmoyo:

That's exactly where I got it, Mayuko...Yes, very harsh indeed.
Avatar 2:03pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo OH MY GOD. They're the worst!!!
  2:03pm mzmzzm:

pinnaclei liked him in nick roeg film too. but again Mr. X in JFK was his pinnacle i thought.
Avatar 2:03pm northguineahills:

Richard Youngs check

bagpiipes check

lets get this mutha started!
  2:05pm mzmzzm:

okinawa was wonderful. Ynakuni Island & Ishigaki Island next!
Avatar 2:06pm northguineahills:

awwww, it's closing time Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. Enjoy the bright sunshine this afternoon and look out for Easter bunnies and April Fool jokes tomorrow.
Avatar 2:08pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko, this was an amazing show. Sadly I'll miss most or all of next week's show: Byambajargal will be in town!
Avatar 2:08pm northguineahills:

lultz, Mayuko!
Avatar 2:08pm northguineahills:

bossman digDoug doesn't mind if you go over.

Avatar 2:10pm Dave B:

Good stuff! hope to see you soon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm tmoyo:

Thanks Mayuko for a wonderful show!
Avatar 2:14pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko, love Le Douanier's paintings.
Better late than never as we say over here.
Avatar 2:15pm Mayuko:

Hey, Brian in UK!! Thanks for stopping by!
Avatar 2:16pm Brian in UK:

There was a song many years ago by Principle Edwards Magic Theatre called Kettering. It is a small town in Northamptonshire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Yapoos is a very nice song. Thanks for playing it!
Avatar 2:16pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for listening! Happy April Fools Day tomorrow, and hope to see you all again next week!
Avatar 2:17pm Mayuko:

ah! I see now what the title Kettering was referring to, thanks Brian! Glad you dig it, Ken!
Avatar 3:40pm fred:

Just watched the movie, I loved it. I also got a laugh from the scene with a YMO poster and Chiru writing a love letter to Haruomi Hosono
Avatar 9:46am Mayuko:

@fred yeah that scene was funny!
