I miss the “Star Wars” craze from 1977 to 1980. The media landscape was different so there were all kinds of nonsense and ephemera floating around everywhere. A much simpler time in terms of overmarketing.

Rich in Washington:

@JakeGould: Movies are so pre-hyped now. We see jillions of posts on their casting, special effects, spoilers, etc., long before the film's even released.
Star Wars sort of seemed to come out of nowhere by comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am
Rich in Washington:

Ironically, Star Wars was originally going to get an electronic score, but the decision to go with bombastic symphonic music - sort of out-of-fashion in 70s cinema was a later inspiration - for better or for worse.
  10:32am
Brendan:

Speaking of bones and yet on an unrelated topic, I found a baby turtle on my front walk yesterday. I took it down in the woods in Rock Creek Park and walked a bit to find a transitional area (upland / lowland ) not far from water. After settling on a spot , I released it. No sooner than I turned around and took two steps did I see an empty, beached upper shell (carapace) of a box turtle. It was a circle of life moment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Joe McG:

BTW, does anyone know what it means to "rock your body out"? Out of what/where? Out of energy?
  10:36am
JakeGould:

@RichinWashington: I always understood that George Lucas wanted to recreate the scores of films like “Ivanhoe” and “Robin Hood.” — “The rough edit of Star Wars had a temporary track which used pieces of Gustav Holst's The Planets suite, snatches of Alex North's score for Cleopatra (Joseph L Mankiewicz, 1963) and selections from Bernard Hermann's music for Alfred Hitchcock. Whilst these stock tracks helped create the right mood, there was never - as had been suggested since - the possibility of actually releasing the film with such a track. Lucas wanted a rich, orchestral score, something old-fashioned and outdated at the time. He knew it should be reminiscent of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the multi-award-winning film composer who had scored The Adventures of Robin Hood (Michael Curtz, 1938) and The Sea Hawk (Michael Curtiz, 1940), two of his moders for Star Wars.”

White Album was probably my favorite when I was a kid, too. I couldn't help but admire the irreverence and self-deprecating tone of much of it.

white album was my favorite beatles album from the time of release as well. supplanted by abbey road for a year or 2 but ultimately remained my favorite.

Mike Sin:

Amazing that this great single (and the follow-up LP) only saw a Japanese release back in 1968!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
Joe McG:

Should be interesting to hear Joey, Todd, Micky from the Monkees, and Christopher Cross (!) sing the White Album live. Here's more info including the tour dates: www.rollingstone.com...

It was also one of the few rock albums in my father's collection. Once I asked him why he had bought it when I knew it wasn't his cuppa tea. He responded that he figured he should see what all the fuss was about, and after listening, quickly concluded that it was about nothing.

David (in London):

This is such a great interview. The story of Badfinger is so harrowing that it's nice to hear Joey laughing and flashing his typical Scouse wit.
  11:40am
JakeGould:

@Roberto: My first introduction to the Beatles was my sister’s copy of “Sgt. Pepper.” Since it was the only cool thing in our record collection I showed it to some friends. An older friend then looked at it and deemed it a “fake” because it had an Apple Records logo on the label. And thus my first introduction to the Beatles was also my first introduction to pedantic Beatle’s fan record collectors.

i've loved Badfinger from my first hearing ~ 69? 70? finally able to catch their songs on a portable cassette recorder pointed at the radio & had to carry that around, 1970 or so. i'd just stand on the subway platform in nyc, 10 years old & play it for all to hear. :-)
