I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Gonna have to hit the road about a half hour from now, so I will listen to this show in full tomorrow before D:O rather than interrupt its wonderful flow! But wanted to wave hello anyway!

Good afternoon, Mayuko, Play Vertigo denizens, the Vertigo-curious, and all.

@fred: picked up that Whitehead at the library today.

Good morning! Trying to think of something clever to say but don't seem to have it in me yet. Maybe some coffee would help... Quirky dancy elecrronicy music seems to be working too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm

@Sem: I liked it. It's a short one, gone swiftly

Welcome, my radio family Sem! Good morning, rw! Not exactly BGM for morning coffee kind of music right now, but glad to be your company.

I really like this Judgitzu track
Avatar 12:18pm

@fred the other track in that release is pretty cool, too.

I don't know, I could think of a lot worse music to wake up to. And the company is superb.

@rw probably I should always start my show with Wake me up before you go-go, for our wonderful west coast listenerds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
fred:

I went to a show of short (2 minutes max) electro-acoustic pieces by young composers at work. Pretty cool and wide-ranging, the base material went from pure synthesis to cello to tibetan bowl to duck calls
  12:22pm
rw:

Ha! Maybe I should set that track on my phone as my morning alarm. Somehow it randomly set as Roy Orbison's In Dreams.

Tibetan bowls and duck calls...

@Mayuko: Kayla Cashetta did one using cello sounds she sometimes made sound like a voice, it reminded me of Audrey Chen. Justina Repečkaitė used a Tibetan bowl placed on a snare drum, really nice sounds and processed beautifully. Oren Boneh did what he called a "duck call fanfare", that one was a lot of fun

@Netochka Nezvanova: It's a smaller world than you think. A composer/noise musician from Bangalore is in Paris these days and he's a friend of someone who occasionally works here. I was asked to send him info about possible gigs here, but I can't remember his name now

Kant beat a title like that!
Avatar 1:28pm
Mayuko:

What does the title mean, ParUbi?
  1:28pm
Netochka Nezvanova:

@fred I'd suspect they don't live here, but I'd love to be proven wrong. My plan was to organize a John Zorn Cobra (game piece) with south indian traditional temple drummers and a noise artist would fit right in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
ParUbi:

The thing in itself-- the unknowable thing as it exists independently of experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
ParUbi:

Kant writes: "And we indeed, rightly considering objects of sense as mere appearances, confess thereby that they are based upon a thing in itself, though we know not this thing as it is in itself, but only know its appearances, viz., the way in which our senses are affected by this unknown something."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
fred:

@Netochka Nezvanova: the guy's name is Hemant Sreekumar. I don't know him at all and never met him, I just sent him info about local shows, so I don't know if he's still based in Bangalore
  1:39pm
Netochka Nezvanova:

Mayukooooooo always brings so many surprises to the playlist :)

@fred Thx! Will look into it.

@parUbi “I bear within me the seed, the rudiments, the possibility of life's capacities and endeavors. Where might I be, if I were not here? Who, what, how could I be, if I were not me, if this outward appearance that is me did not encase me, separating my consciousness from that of others who are not me? An organism—a blind, rash, pitiful eruption of the insistent assertion of the will. Far better, really, if that will were to drift free in a night without time or space, than to languish in a prison cell lit only by the flickering, uncertain flame of the intellect.” ― Thomas Mann, Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family
Avatar 1:44pm
Mayuko:

@ParUbi This is difficult! I need to ask my former philosophy major friend to explain this. He spends literally half a year to finish one life drawing because things are forever changing and he cannot capture anything accurately so he can never truly finish it. I have no idea but sounds like a similar kind of struggle as Das Ding An Sich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Sem:

Lovin' this 2nd hour, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm

That reminds me of Kafka's story about the philosopher and the spinning top! biblioklept.org...

Matu:

@parUbi--what a powerful, amazing quote from Thomas Mann--thank you for sharing! Also, the Kant and previous post--wow--I love it. I have thought about these things my whole adult life. I actually just did some psillycjybin and found it very conducive to a different way of viewing my self and other humans in relation to reality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
ParUbi:

I'm a philosophy adjunct :\
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
fred:

Maybe it's the translation, but I never could understand anything from Kant. I understand what the words mean, but I have no clue why they are in that order
  1:49pm
Matu:

I do disagree somewhat with Mann's view of the organism. I don't think it is pitiful. I think it is glorious and a gift (not that it isn't painful)
  1:51pm
Matu:

@ParUbi--do you have a particular focus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm

@Matu-- Netochka Nezvanova provided the Mann quote. But, if you like it, there's a poem by Rilke I want you to read.
