Ooh, had some nice corn chips earlier, with a crawfish-spinach dip. Hey Tom and everyone.

Hello, TDash, coel, mariano, roman, ultra...late night!

That Mission of Burma track was kickin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am
TomDash:

Thanks Mr Pumpy - always a fave! And hello all, thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17am
mariano:

Hey Mr. Pumpy, coelacanth, and romandogbird!
  12:22am
rw:

What's going on here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am
Mr. Pumpy:

What the hell is up, everyone?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am
mariano:

Hey rw! Not much going on here, Mr. Pumpy - trying to get some moves down for a magic trick. How are things with your dad? I remember you saying you were bringing him home and your aunt was coming to help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am
Mr. Pumpy:

mariano...my aunt got in today and I picked her up and we went and hung out with the old man. I then took her back to his place and hung out for a bit. Now I'm home and having a couple of beers as I get ready to spring him out tomorrow and bring him home. There is a lot to keep track of, social workers, therapists, bills, doctors, medication. Anyhow...it's going. Magic? Are you a magician?
  12:30am
rw:

mariano! Here neither. Fighting a cold and trying to get some work done. Motivation levels are at a low to begin with and the cold isn't helping. Magic trick, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am
Mr. Pumpy:

I'm loving the early Cure vibe of this track...with other bananas shit going on. Awesome.
  12:34am
rw:

I went out once with a woman who introduced me to Oval. She heard about them from Duane when he was at Other Music. She's resurfaced recently and now I hear Oval on the radio. Maybe it's a sign.
  12:35am
rw:

To the music of Oval, I mean. Not the group themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
coelacanth∅:

i wish you a speedy recovery rw

stay strong Mr.P

...my internet here is quite dodgy - cuts out about 6 times/song. might bail soon
  12:37am
rw:

What's that coel? You're cutting out. And Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
mariano:

I know I've said it before, but your old man's lucky to have you, Mr. Pumpy. Glad you're getting some help too. Yeah, hope you feel better, rw. Sucks having to work when you're sick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
coelacanth∅:

this reminds me of jan kawalski (a bit) and the last one reminded me of something but i'm not grasping it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am
mariano:

As far as the magic, not really a magician, more of an enthusiast/dilettante, but it's fun to (try to) learn stuff. Kinda like learning a musical instrument: eye-hand coordination, concentration. The one I'm trying to get down is by an English magician, Paul Gordon. Some really tricky moves (for me) but he makes it look so natural and smooth: www.youtube.com...
  12:39am
rw:

Oh, and hey coelacanth!!

mariano, that's the plight of the self-employed. It never ends.
  12:41am
rw:

Weird, I know a musician who was working as a magician for a spell. I hadn't put the two things together like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42am
coelacanth∅:

rw yeah it's a sign...although whenever i get these signs there's graffiti and stickers all over them and i'm not sure what they say; but hopefully you'll have better luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
mariano:

Freelancer here too, rw. What do you do? Have a feeling we might've talked about work before, but my memory these days...
  12:45am
rw:

Haha! Thanks coel and TomDash!! Signs are darned tough to read sometimes!
  12:46am
rw:

mariano, I'm a photographer. I specialize in photographing artwork. But don't tell anyone. You?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48am
Mr. Pumpy:

@mariano...thanks. I'm lucky to have him too, and good friends...you peeps included! No joke. Damn...I'm brain-dead right now. I wanna talk magic and tunes and shit, and I'm fading. I'll say this...Ricky Jay
  12:50am
rw:

Oh, and that card trick is... magic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
mariano:

Ah, ok rw - don't think we've talked about work before, must've been someone else. I'm a graphic designer, standard-issue ad/marketing/PR with some even more boring corporate stuff.

Ricky Jay is one of the chief gods of my pantheon, Mr. Pumpy. Lots of good YouTube clips of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
coelacanth∅:

i was once commissioned (for next to nothing) to photograph someones paintings -based on my photography, but absolutely no experience in that specialty.
i guess my work was acceptable...i mean, it was used; but then, it's easy to find terrible photography in a catalogue isn't it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
mariano:

Yeah, trying to work in a couple of tricks with tarot cards to change it up a bit. Trying to add to the Paul Gordon routine, namely have the Devil cards appear somewhere else, make it spookier.

You're a photographer too, coelacanth? Don't think I knew that, that's cool.
  12:58am
rw:

coel, for some reason it's a niche that seems difficult to fill. Only a handful of good art shooters in LA. It's getting a little better now but for decades it seemed to be about five or so people doing most of the work. I feel lucky to have fallen into it. I work at a different place every day. Interesting stuff, cool and interesting people. Always something at least a little challenging, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58am
ultradamno:

Oh, this is a French band...I thought maybe we were getting more Cincinnati punk www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58am
coelacanth∅:

i'm not so into sleight of hand, generally...not that i'm not impressed by it -but i generally don't stop to watch it... but actually that sounds cool mariano
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
mariano:

Mentalism seems to be what people are gravitating towards nowadays, coela. Don't need many if any gimmicks or lots of stuff to carry around. There's a cool mentalism effect with tarot I'm working on too, something by Luke Jermay .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am
coelacanth∅:

damn, rw i did think about pursuing it at the time. looks like i definitely should have.

oh and mariano no, i'm not. i was heading in that direction for a minute - sold a few pieces but a few setbacks later i wont call myself a photographer...unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am
mariano:

Sorry to hear, coelacanth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am
coelacanth∅:

mariano i *think* i know what you mean by that. makes me recall some youboob videos where the guy wasn't really doing any sleight of hand but claiming to and basically fucking with people's heads. pretty funny -sometimes
  1:14am
rw:

coel, it's a good gig, but it seems to take a particular temperament or something. Lots of people try it out but only a few stick. I don't know what it would be like in NYC. Lugging equipment around seems like a pain.
  1:18am
rw:

Though... driving around in LA. Major pain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
mariano:

Oh, well, mentalism is basically mind-reading effects: have someone pick a random word out of a book and you tell them what it is, have someone draw something you can't see, and you draw the same thing, or ask them to name a card, you take a deck of cards that's been sitting in a box in plain sight and their card is the only one face-down or of a different color back, that sort of thing. Derren Brown's the big name these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
mariano:

You have to be ethical though, I don't like effects that mess with people's minds too much, or even suggest that I have actual psychic powers. It's a big no-no in magic, because people can and do abuse it to con people out of money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am
coelacanth∅:

right rw -i guess i would've ended up in the city, wouldn't i have.
i'm happy you've got that. my guess is it's pretty secure -unless the shit totally hits the fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
Mr. Pumpy:

Night all...you are gods...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
mariano:

'Night Mr. Pumpy - have fun tomorrow!

rw:

I need to head out too. Thank you Tom Dash! Always great. Later kids. Have a good evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
coelacanth∅:

mariano you have before and now it's uncanny how much you remind me of a friend from childhood. he was really into learning how to use the mind in ways most people don't consider possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
TomDash:

thanks Mr Pumpy and rw, til next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
coelacanth∅:

gnight Mr.P
g'night rw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
coelacanth∅:

...and he would never have taken advantage of people in the course of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am
coelacanth∅:

- and thanks for explaining that mariano.

i was just about to head out myself. my internet is periodically crappy and it probably wouldn't do me much harm to get a decent night's sleep.
Thanks Tom! Excellent as always!
take care everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am
mariano:

Interesting, coelacanth. Yeah, if I were a total sociopath, Madonn' I could make some moolah. The main thing I've learned from magic is that we're all easy to fool, top magicians and scientists included.

Oh, good night coelacanth, nice gabbin' witcha, as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
coelacanth∅:

got that! wouldn't mind talking about magic and the mind again sometime.
