Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 7, 2020 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Animateed image is indeed very big (7mb). When I clicked, it took a long time before it started playing. If the animated image were instead directly embedded on the page instead of swapped in by a script, the browser would probably start playing it before the whole thing loaded.

I don't think the SSL is relevant, although it would be better if the still and animated images were loaded with https URL's, to avoid the mixed content warning the browsers display now that all playlists are served via SSL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Uncle Michael:

It wouldn't start playing because that requires a click to toggle. Could be a bottleneck somewhere. 7mb is hardly the biggest I've used. I try to shrink them.

Doug Schulkind:

My afternoon appointment rescheduled due to the snow, so I am here to get hinkified!
  1:29pm
spodiodi:

hola, Kenzo -- here's what's happening: the large image post-click is loading slowly -- so slowly, that the wfmu playlist page gets refreshed per usual (at about 30 seconds, maybe a little longer?) anyway -- the gif load then ends, and will not continue to load until the jpg is clicked again
Avatar 1:30pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Image just took my browser 11 seconds to load after clicking. Because of the javascript swap method you use, the browser will do nothing until the image is completely loaded.

If the image were just embedded on the page directly instead of swapped in by the script, it would start playing before the full loading of the image.

Similarly, if the image were embedded using the Image Library, the smaller version would start playing immediately, while the click-to-enlarge version would display a "loading..." indicator until the fuller image fully loaded.
Avatar 1:32pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Also, you seem to have a syntax error in your script/embed code.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
The Oscar:

Pretty sure an Electric Banana track can be heard in Romero's Dawn of the Dead!
  1:33pm
dan:

  1:33pm
spodiodi:

looks like the refresh is more like 60 seconds
Avatar 1:34pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If the playlist refresh issue is annoying, Michael, you can be immediately switched over to the new dynamic playlist approach and see how it goes for everyone. (So far, only minor issues remain...) Everyone would have to hit reload, though, or they'd be left in a funny state.
  1:35pm

The next long song you should do on a future program should be Colosseum's "Valentyne Suite".

Big Brother The Holding Company did a great raggedy-ass version of Hall Of The Mountain King on a local TV show in 1966. Janis is wearing a table cloth.

There is also an aircheck on KFRC from 1967 with most of the Grateful Dead in the studio talking about whatever. The most surprising part is hearing Pigpen talking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

More recently, Charles Lloyd has produced some intriguing collaborations with Lucinda Williams. Worth investigating.

That's it! KFRC was a great AM pop station that jumped on the changes early. In Gimme Shelter, after all the shit went down, you see The Rolling Stones been whisked away in the KFRC news chopper.
