Hello all, for once I'm here live and from the very start. Wondering if today might be the day when Jeffrey plays 100% artists I've never heard of - it's been oh-so-close before. The thrill of adventure never stops! Though I'm equally happy to hear beloved favourites. Anyway, this will make work so much more pleasant.

@TDK60, it is a drone instrument, often used in Indian music. Sometimes heard in Scottish folk, maybe to resemble the pipe drones:

@Toothgrinder Tom - leaving politics, etc aside, it's just grim here in winter, especially in the rural west. Come December, January, you're looking at a couple hours of usable light a day, while the rest of it's dark, wind-whipped and the rain just lashes at you relentlessly. It's a forced reversion to scared, forbidding times. ;)
Avatar 7:10am
TDK60:

Thanks Heidee! I suppose I've called it a harmonium in the past. Maybe it's a bit different.
Avatar 7:11am
TDK60:

Avatar 7:11am
YETI BOB:

@Heidee: I just found this: "In the early nineties, traditional Irish singer Nóirín Ní Riain brought the shruti box to Ireland, giving it a minor place in traditional Irish music. More recently Scottish folk artist Karine Polwart has championed the instrument, using it on some of her songs". Wasn't aware of the shruti in Celtic music, always learning something here.

@TDK: A shruti is different from a harmonium, it has no keyboard.

@Niall yeah, that’s kinda what I thought. Plus I love skiing.

@Yeti Bob: thanks for the encouragement and suggestion, somehow I knew urn was wrong, but that's the way it came up in the strip when I typed it, so I just went with it in an anxiousness to get it done and posted. plus I know the band The yearning. so how could I have made that mistake. I kick myself on a daily basis with 20/20 being hindsight. I often feel out of my element most times when I get on the chat because I am. I won't lie I always feel intimidated but yet at the same time intrigued. @YetiBob and Jeffrey- Agreeing here with the sweetness of that "Families" tune too! Feeling that sense of place and memory in it. Thanks moreover for all these vivid ringing voices this morning Jeffrey! Happy to be up early on a frosty Saturday here south of Chicago and tuning in live with my 9 day old daughter now.

Jeffrey - I just wanted to say, I have been up all night because my neighbour decided to have a yelling and smashing jubilee until 4am, and this show is quelling my homesickness and making me feel like I can face things! I <3 WFMU
