Frog cassette? Cool Andrew. Squirrels, birds, love 'em.
They say wildlife are taking up the space humans are leaving. Makes sense. A lot of red foxes.
I don't see them....oh, cuz I'm inside!
SmokinJ, monrin'.9:20am : THanks Doc. trying to get into more and more new stuff-new to me, at least.9:20am : Hanging with GF's cat Sqweek. Missing my good girl Alanna and very good boy Miller back in Bklyn.9:21am : Finally caught you live - usually listen on archives (I must be up too early!)
Glad that you are back, Bob9:23am : Dig ListenerBop, hey Frankem, nah, you're up just right!9:25am : ..wow, a Bela breakfast.9:26am : OH the old FM my fav!9:26am : Good morning.9:28am : Hey Bob! :)🥁 9:28am : Love this Mac tune.9:28am : RIP Danny Kirwan9:29am : G'morning phat9:30am : Amen theia. Kirwan was the best.9:31am : Great set!9:35am : Good Morning enjoying the music and morning Sunshine, Ty Bob B.9:36am : So great to have Bob back! And I don't know if it's Bob at home, or the Skeleton Crew, or the atmosphere, or what, but the sound is noticeably fantastic this morning (through my old, restored Scott tube tuner).9:38am : Thanks melinda,& Be Now B.
And to you Taavi.
Glad it's sounding good!9:40am : Good morning from Seattle. Best part of my week is waking up listening to Bob Brainen spinning the arcane and the obvious, too.
Thanks for the early King Gizzard shot, BB.9:40am : no fantasy such as this song gives. my favourite.🥁 9:40am : Recently heard a King Crimson set from the Fillmore East in '69. They were layin' it down.9:41am : Thank you Bob for this amazing Crimson/McDonald And Giles 2fer! The McDonald and Giles takes the crown!9:43am : Good morning Bob & Brainiacs. This is fun, i like KC but I never heard this McDonald and Giles album9:43am : Flight Of The Ibis is the type of song that could play forever and it still wouldn't be long enough.9:43am : Yeti, the M&G album is phenomenal. Make time to hear it. It's worth every second.9:45am : Thanks Frank, I will.9:46am : Hi egould310, I dig the Gizz. Brand new album out yesterday!
Glad you like, mauri.
Hey Frank In Queens, I love them both.
Hey Yeti Bob McD&G album is among my faves.9:47am : good morning9:48am : such a good song. jo stafford is the best9:48am : Hello Yes,9:49am : Bob, yes both a great, but there's just something about the M&G song (and entire album) that's magical.9:49am : Love this Jo Stafford version9:49am : I've dug through a lot of crates and I've never even *seen* McDonald and Giles! I've passed over Giles,Giles, and Fripp a few times though - didn't look very promising by the cover (I know, you can't always judge by the cover! - but you can't buy every record either)9:49am : Welcome Back, Bob! This music is beautiful.9:49am : [prog detective taking notes, gathering evidence]9:50am : Ea!9:50am : I need to pull out my Jonathan and Darlene Edwards records.🥁 9:50am : Paul Weston9:50am : One of the benefits of waking up at 6am on a Saturday here on the west coast.9:52am : @WilliamfromDumont yep!9:53am : I was at the Bottom Line years ago, and a British musician (might’ve been Richard Thompson) played Shenandoah expecting the audience to join in (ala Pete Seeger). The audience didn’t have a clue. Even though it’s such a beautiful classic American anthem, the USA is not the UK. We’re just too big and not as “united” as the name implies.9:53am : TDK.. has a program gathering evidence .. I better "watch my mouth" :) hahahaha9:53am : Bing was the best whistler.9:53am : @WilliamfromDumont I got those records from my parents who liked putting them on a parties without telling people what the were9:55am : I love McDonald & Giles. I wish it would have sold and been better known. FMU is the place of second chances!
Travisano66, thanks.
Yeti, GG&F has some good stuff and some not so much.
Blues Mandinga -is that Chris Elliot spinning?
Good point Jeff. Kinda sad.9:55am : Saw Fats at 16 in small club.Great musicians all.🥁 9:56am : @phat. Weston's Crescent City is a personal fave.9:57am : Wow Zoot, wish I was there!
Whats that piece from Wm?9:57am : (Just in case missed) Fripp & partner Toyah have been doing silly short videos from home.9:58am : Did Fripp work with Eno?9:59am : @WilliamfromDumont I'll look for it!🥁 9:59am : Bob, it's the title track from a Columbia LP ('56?). The Esplanade At Sunset is the one for me. Gorgeous piece.10:03am : diggin’! Hey Bob & all! Marvelettes totally rule!!10:05am : yeh Zoot - No Pussyfooting album '73? Evening Star album '75?10:05am : Yes Zoot.I have to check that out Wm.
Hey Dennis, I'm with you. Gotta get a best of or something.10:06am : "Mcdonald and Giles" and "Flight of the Ibis" in particular was played regularly on Palm Beach County's short lived but much loved "underground" FM station WMUM. It is a tune that typifies the vibe of listening to that exciting different music as a young teenager when the whole world of music was wide open. A vibe I get listening to this program!10:07am : Morning WFMU10:07am : Was listening to this last Saturday from the Fairport Convention boxset I won from WFMU a few years back. What a song!10:11am : According to Wikipedia: "Test pressings were made following this sequence, but before the album was officially released, Richard Thompson requested that "Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman" be removed, since he was not happy with his guitar solo;[2] this removal was done at such a late stage that the first LP sleeves had already been printed with the song shown on the track listing. A black block had to be printed over the original list with the revised track listing overprinted in gold, but a few sleeves were issued to the public without the overprinting and with the incorrect track listing. All subsequent printings had the corrected track listing despite the fact that the sleeve notes still referred to the missing track."10:11am : Ross T, that's wild. Great description of those times. We would chip in on $5 worth of hash, get together in my room and listen to Crimso, 1st ELP and Mcdonald & Giles, etc.
Hey to you Crei6hton & Marc Francis.10:12am : Gmorning BB, Cooh John and united brains10:14am : Thanks DaveinPA, so it was the guitar solo? I wonder if he redid it on the Guitar/Vocal album? Record label must have loved that extra expense.
Hey DjLorraine10:14am : Morning fellow listeners10:16am : And I'm just finishing Barney Hoskyn's "Small Town Talk" about Woodstock the town. Bob you get a nice little reference in there! Picturing you in that scene with your $5 worth ;)10:17am : Bob - Your show and timeslot are the perfect slide into Saturday after a week of week stuff. Don't ever change.10:18am : WFMU listener John, howdy.
Ross, not me! A cousin who I never met who changed his last name from "brainin" to "brainen" He gets a few mentions in books and album notes. I woulda been a bit too young.🥁 10:19am : mmmm...hash.10:19am : Pedro in Arlington, thanks, glad to hear it. "Arlington" like as in the Arlington Diner? That would make it North Arlington, actually. Or Va?10:20am : @Bib nice tunage10:21am : I mean bob nice tunage10:21am : Good morning, Bob. I've been enjoying the show while I cook and eat breakfast, as I do every Saturday since you've returned.
Hello to comments-page friends.10:23am : @wendy hello back10:23am : Strangely, there's also an Arlington Diner in Stroudsburg PA10:24am : Duly noted Bob!10:25am : Sounding great Bob!10:25am : Bob, I have a fairly comprehensive Marvelettes comp. Will "drop" later today.10:27am : Hi Bob and everyone.
Lucky for me your show in the current time slot means great music for my Saturday drives :)
Wendy, hope you’re hanging in there, doing as well as can be.
Safe weekend wishes, all.🥁 10:29am : Nicky Hopkins looks like a ghost in the Jefferson Airplane footage from Woodstock.10:31am : HAha kitty10:31am : musical cat adds to the ambience =^..^=10:35am : @Really lisa hello and hanging in there10:37am : Morning Bob and listeners! This new Arkestra album is a real gem. Exactly what this moment called for.10:37am : Yes indeed.10:37am : Thanks WFMU listener John,
Hey Wendy&
Really Lisa!10:38am : That sure was the Arkestra!🥁 10:39am : New Arkestra. Maybe 2020 isn't so bad.10:42am : Hey Corey, agree.10:43am : This show pairs well with bagels and coffee.10:44am : Hitting the Saturday vibe on the nose. Good morning!10:46am : @McGroovey i didn't know what to do with myself on Saturday mornings when Bob was off the air10:48am : McGroovey, sounds right. Hey steveo, Aw thanks Phat.10:48am : @TDK60 - responding to your question in a previous playlist, I'm in Ireland, ad it's been a rather nice day - I feel remiss spending so much of it indoors.10:51am : Thanks again for the awesome show.10:51am : I saw Sun Ra + Arkestra many times. One notable occasion - Sun Ra meets John Cage - Coney Island in the ‘80s. I lived a couple of subway stops away in Bklyn. When I exited the subway, I see John Cage standing alone on the corner of Surf and Stillwell Aves. He’s got a bemused look on his face, is sorta spinning around and looks like he has no idea where he is. I walk over to him and ask if he’s lost. He nods “yes”, and I say “follow me”. We walk over to the boardwalk, and I lead him in to the storefront where the gig takes place. I find a seat in the sparsely attended event. Who’s sitting behind me? 3/4 of NRBQ - Terry, Joey and Tommy. I told Joey this story years later. He got a kick out of it. I tried telling Terry - he could care less.10:53am : Great story Jeff!10:54am : BTW, James Brown on drums10:54am : Thanks for the great story Jeff.10:55am : I lived in Louisville a couple years, and I'm surprised that I didn't hear people claim NRBQ there like they did all those nineties post-hardcore, post-rock and Oldham bands. Because they do love claiming their artists there.10:56am : Maybe it's a generational difference, though.10:56am : Hi Bob - Arlington, Virginia. Hometown of Forrest Tucker and Shirley MacLaine.10:57am : I love this version, Bob. So smooth and effortless.
At a sound check no less.11:00am : @Jeff Awesome story. Thanks for sharing it!11:00am : Thanks Bob! Always great.11:00am : Great show Bob. Thanks!11:00am : thanks!11:00am : Thanks Bob! Went too fast! Take care all.
