Sinatra wasn't precisely a stranger to radio, but he hadn't led his own show until the 1953. He would guest on other programs, often belt out a tune, and in some cases, to a skit or scene, maybe an interview. But in the early 50's he could use a regular paycheck, and, "From Here To Eternity," was still a bit away. So this would fill a strange hole in his career.

As mentioned before, George Lefferts created this show, one of this post-"Dimension X" projects. Lefferts mostly published Sci-Fi, but he did try his hand at noir and detective style stories, now and then. This show sort of proved that he always had that mode in him, and it only gets better as the series progresses. Ernest Kinoy - worked with Lefferts on Dimension X - wrote with Lefferts on this show, too, as did a few other writers: Norm Sickel, Robert Senadella and Doc Sanford.

In a rare move for shows at the time, Rocky Fortune was aired as a "sustaining series," in other words, without a sponsor, or funding. So, even though I put ads in this show... that is NOT how it was heard, originally.

However, when Sinatra won the Academy Award for, "From Here To Eternity," and it became clear he would be busy with film, it was easy to cancel this show, as it didn't really earn them any money to air it.

As you can hear, there was a bit of a speed change in the recording. I tried my best to "mend" the recording in a way that wasn't too obtrusive. But, it's still better than the original, which was at two different speeds at the splice, and both TOO SLOW.

↳ Song: ""The Martian Death March"" by "X-Minus One"
This is the second time we've heard this story on the show, but the Dimension X version of this story had terrible sound, even if it is a little longer.

This version is a little more tightly scripted, and sounds a lot better. While I like this story in all it's forms, this might be the best radio version.

1997! Everyone remembers when this happened, right?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

This episode's narrator is talking from 2027, when Mars is developed and this death march route has a highway, commemorating it. But the narrator is flashing back to 1997, when most of the story takes place. Both time periods were well in the future in 1955, but we're in-between those spans of time, now.
