I have to admit, THIS is the version of this story that I know best. I've never ready Little Women, and I've never seen any film version. But I know this Lux Radio rendition pretty well!

While it's not PRECISELY a Christmas story, it does take place over December in a couple spots... but it's not really about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm

So far it sounds like an episode of I Love Lucy. In a good way. I've never heard it or read it or anything

I've somehow lived my whole life without realizing Little Women was a romantic comedy

My dad always spoke very highly of Alcott's books / writing, and I think he got that from his parents (my grandparents). (I seem to recall my grandmother liking this book, but I never talked to her about it.)

So far, for the first 20 minutes of this story, Jo has acted completely a-typically for women of this era. (And it doesn't really let up.) I have a feeling portraying Jo in this way was part of the point. It's like showing Marilyn Monroe being direct and going after the men she wants.

Yeah, Jo is sort of my hero. Determined writer, ready to tell everyone to f-off if they deserve it. Jo fights and scraps and doesn't care about what people think. Jo rules.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

I'm a little conflicted about the ending... but... it is a story from 1869, so perhaps this ending was as "progressive" as they could be at the time.

↳ Song: ""Christmas Present"" by "Challenge of The Yukon"
I'm not very familiar with this show, so I have no idea what the dynamic of these characters actually is supposed to be. (Or if they are regular characters, aside from Preston.) Who can say if this is typical or not?

I hope this kid is not a regular, because he's a bit of an asshole.

Austin, I feel compelled to tell you that I’m a distant relative of a former radio actor. My Dad used to talk about him when we were young. His name was Joseph Curtain and he performed on a few popular radio shows (The Adventures of The Thin Man, Our Gal Sunday and Mr. And Mrs North). I only got a chance to meet his brother, Francis who was very kind. Never got a chance to meet him. His daughter is Valerie Curtain and his niece is Jane Curtain of SNL (haven’t met them either, but would love to). I think my Dad was second cousins with him (or something like that). I haven’t heard more than one or two of his episodes but your show is making me want to investigate further.

How fascinating! We all have interesting family stories like that. Certainly, listening to old radio has made me research the strangest things that I had never heard of before. Little references, or trying to figure out where a certain station was from. Mid-Century radio reflects a period that was just long enough ago that it's not really like now... but it's close.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
yerfriendpaul:

A cool little full circle moment came a couple of years ago when my brother started working as a creative director for the Algonquit Theater in Maine and he discovered on their lobby wall of fame, a framed photo of Joseph. Even cooler, our niece performed on the same stage as he did. I love it

↳ Song: ""The Paul Brewer Story"" by "Bold Venture"
I did a little EQ on this episode, and it's pretty crackly... but it still plays. Some of the Bold Venture episodes are in less than stellar shape.

Mary Hunter Wolf was an old family friend, and it was freaky to hear her voice and laugh in Easy Aces air checks from the 1930s, where she played "Marge"

Howdy AR & Radio peoples!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Austin Rich:

At this point, I think the "holiday" content of this particular Bold Venture comes entirely from the fact it was merely aired on a holiday. This is pretty typical of a lot of songs; being "evergreen" was actually more useful than being timely, so "holiday" shows are not always common. But they do happen.
